Naturally Safe Zucol(TM) Brings Europe's Leading Cold Remedy to United States
Date:3/4/2009

- Homeopathic Product Offers Clinically Proven Effective Alternative to Controversial Over-the-Counter Cold Medications -

NEW YORK, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite popular belief, common colds do not decrease as the winter season fades. But, thanks to the availability of a new, naturally safe cold remedy, Zucol(TM) (www.zucol.com), consumers are now better prepared to combat this prevalent virus, which actually strikes more during the spring and summer months. Recently introduced in the United States and long hailed a leader in cold remedies throughout Europe, Zucol is clinically proven to shorten the duration and reduce the severity of symptoms associated with the common cold.

The active ingredient in Zucol, which is produced by German pharmaceutical company, Schwabe Pharmaceuticals, is derived from an extract of pelargonium sidoides, a plant-based pharmaceutical ingredient. It is the top-selling active ingredient for upper respiratory tract infections in Germany and throughout Europe, and its benefits have been featured in several national medical journals including American Family Physician and The Journal of Family Practice.

"Extensive clinical research has proven the safety and efficacy of pelargonium," says David Gumner, vice president of mass market at Nature's Way, the U.S. subsidiary of Schwabe Pharmaceuticals. "Zucol provides a safe and effective alternative to the myriad of questionable cold medications available in today's market."

Tested in 18 published clinical studies, Zucol, when taken at the first sign of a cold, was proven to help patients resume normal activities twice as fast as those who treated their symptoms with other over-the-counter (OTC) cold medications. In addition, the homeopathic treatment for colds and upper respiratory tract infections related to the common cold, helps reduce the likelihood of secondary infections.

As researchers at the University of Maryland Medical School just announced promising discoveries in developing medications to fight rhinoviruses -- the most common virus found in colds -- there still is no cure for the common cold. Yet, Americans spend more than $3 billion each year on OTC cold medications; oftentimes, with less-than-impressive results. In many cases these products mask the related symptoms, providing only temporary relief; however, they do nothing to shorten the duration of the virus. Concern over dangerous side effects of a number of these medications, led to the recommendation by The American College of Chest Physicians to stop using OTC cold medicines for anyone younger than age 14.

"The proven health benefits of Zucol in fighting colds are evident," says Dr. David Riley, a clinical professor of the University of New Mexico Medical School and founder of the Integrative Medical Institute. "The plant-based extract is safe for both adults and children, and consumers can feel comfortable and confident they are taking an FDA-approved treatment that when taken at the onset of a cold, will greatly reduce the severity of its symptoms. Taking into account the recent warnings from the FDA about conventional cough and cold medications, Zucol provides a safe and effective alternative," adds Riley.

Unlike competing zinc-based products, Zucol is a gentle, quick-dissolve lozenge, which will not irritate membranes, the stomach or leave a lingering, unpleasant taste in the mouth. And with all-natural homeopathic ingredients and no known drug interactions, Zucol helps eliminate concern when taken with other remedies or medications.

Recent studies show rhinovirus infections, the most common virus found in colds, are more present during the spring and summer months. Colds are highly contagious and generally appear about one to three days after exposure to a cold virus. Antibiotics, which are used to treat bacterial infections, are virtually ineffective against the viral infections caused by colds. The average adult suffers from two to four colds a year, and children, especially preschoolers, may have as many as six to 10. According to the recent University of Maryland Medical School study, common colds and related complications cost an estimated $60 billion a year in direct and indirect costs in the United States.
