The influenza virus, known as the flu, is a serious and contagious respiratory illness that ranges from mild to severe and can be fatal. Some people are more susceptible than others, including the young, the infirm, the elderly, women who are pregnant, and health care providers. These groups especially should do their best to protect themselves from the flu.
The number one way to prevent the flu is to get the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine exposes the body to a weakened or dead version of the influenza virus. The human body then builds up defenses to protect itself, so that if one comes in contact with the influenza virus, enough defenses will have built up to fight it off. The vaccine should be administered when it becomes available each October for maximum protection, but getting a vaccination later in the season still can offer protection. There are two types of flu vaccines, the shot, made of dead viruses, and the nose-spray, made of weakened but live viruses.
There are several other ways to help minimize the chances of contracting the flu. The first is to avoid contact with anyone who has the flu virus. If one becomes sick, staying home to prevent passing on the flu to others is recommended. If one must sneeze or cough, covering the mouth or nose with ones hand is recommended.
