Nationally Known Interventional Neuroradiologist John Pile-Spellman, M.D., Joins Neurological Surgery, P.C.

With more than 150 peer review scientific papers to his name, Dr. Pile-Spellman is actively involved in research that looks at such areas as whether extreme cold can prevent the death of brain tissue during stroke. He has been an investigator in six pivotal clinical trials, and has numerous patents for endovascular treatment and imaging technologies.

“What attracted me to Neurological Surgery, P.C. was that the practice has developed a way to get high level, complex services to people in the community who need them, in a fast and highly specialized manner,” said Dr. Pile-Spellman. “I am excited about joining the practice.”

Prior to joining Neurological Surgery, P.C., Dr. Pile-Spellman was vice-chair of research and director of interventional MRI at Columbia University Medical Center. He continues his research activities in the Biomedical Engineering Department of Columbia University’s School of Engineering. Board certified in radiology, he has been an attending radiologist and director of academic interventional neuroradiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Pile-Spellman received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Dakota and his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston. He completed a residency in diagnostic radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then completed fellowships in neuroradiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and in interventional neuroradiology at New York University Medical Center. He was a visiting fellow in endovascular neurosurgery at the Kiev Neurosurgical Institute, Kiev, Ukraine. Among his many honors are membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Society and the Sadek Hilal Faculty Research Award at Columbia University. He has been selected by the Castle Connolly Guide to America’s Top Doctors and Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area from 2001 to 2010.
