(PRWEB) March 1, 2010 -- The Kidney TRUST, a non-profit organization dedicated to chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevention, as well as providing financial assistance to people already on dialysis, is observing National Kidney Month by reaching out to people affected by kidney disease to ask for their personal stories relating to this problem that affects 31 million Americans.

Personal stories from those who have been touched by kidney disease will be featured on the TRUST’s website at www.kidneytrust.org through the month. In asking the public to contribute their own stories, the TRUST is asking for help in spreading the word about kidney disease and the importance of early detection and treatment.

The good news is that kidney disease can be delayed or prevented if caught early. The Kidney TRUST’s rapid-screening program, which has reached almost 13,000 people since its launch in October 2007, has the potential to save lives.

According to one screening participant in Colorado, “It was a real wake-up call to me. I went to the doctor soon after I got the test result and was told that I needed to cut down on my salt intake, get more exercise, and eat a healthier diet. I changed my diet, started working out three times a week, and lost about 20 pounds.”

There are also stories to be told by people who have already experienced kidney failure. Over the past year the TRUST has piloted a financial assistance program for people on dialysis who are having trouble managing co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles for medical treatment, services, and prescription drugs. Since the start of the program over 600 grants have been awarded and approximately $1.2 million in funds committed to grant recipients.

One grant participant from New Mexico put it this way: “The grant was simply a godsend for me and the entire family. We were really struggling. I was starting to think about skipping some of the drugs I was supposed to be taking and splitting pills to make them last. With the grant, all the worry went away. It was really the missing piece of the puzzle.”

The Kidney TRUST was founded in 2006 by DaVita Inc., a leading provider of kidney care in the United States. The Kidney TRUST is an independent, nonprofit organization that believes everyone should be empowered to take a proactive role in their health.
