Narconon Fresh Start Imports South African Speaker to Reveal International Aspect of Addiction to LA Youth
Date:5/17/2013

(PRWEB) May 17, 2013

Every year, Narconon Fresh Start headquartered in Warner Springs, California sends its drug prevention specialists to schools all over the Southland. By utilizing a proven eight-part curriculum and combining it with a remarkable rapport with local students, Narconon drug prevention specialists prompt life-changing realizations from students of all ages. With the addition of South African Robert van der Feyst to the team for a week in April 2013, students got a whole new viewpoint on how different cultures are affected by drug addiction.

Van der Feyst himself spent ten years struggling to free himself from drug addiction. It was only when he traveled from South Africa to a Narconon drug rehab center in Denmark that he broke free. Then he knew he had to help others escape the torment he had suffered so he founded the drug prevention group Narconon Cape Town in 1997. In the years since its founding, Robert and his staff have reached tens of thousands of people in schools, businesses and other organizations and millions more through radio and television.

One 2012 report from the region says that South African drug usage is twice the world norm. An official claims that at least 15% of South Africans have a drug problem.

As he visited Southland schools with Narconon Fresh Start educators, van der Feyst had a chance to tell his story of addiction and recovery to hundreds of children. “Despite my funny accent, the students seemed to understand my experiences,” van der Feyst said. “There are different patterns to the types of drugs used here and in South Africa but other than that, drug abuse and addiction is a universal problem.”

Tony Bylsma, longtime drug educator for Narconon Fresh Start, added his viewpoint to van der Feyst's comments. “I always tell young people that drug abuse is a problem the whole world round,” he said. “It really brought it home to these kids that people just like Robert who live ten thousand miles away are suffering the same problems as people they see in their own neighborhoods.”

“It's hard to say who learned more from this experience,” added van der Feyst. “I learned so much from these kids and these experienced Californian drug prevention educators. I'm taking what I learned home to South Africa to continue fighting this deadly problem.”

In South Africa, the Narconon Cape Town drug prevention organization is located in Maitland. A drug rehabilitation center in Darling, South Africa offers the Narconon drug rehabilitation program. For more information on Narconon, visit http://www.narconon.org or call 1-800-775-8750.
