Narconon Arrowhead Volunteers Provide Enthusiastic Support for Pride in McAlester Celebration
Date:5/1/2013

(PRWEB) May 01, 2013

Across the Midwest, many small-to-medium towns suffer from neglect, especially in downtown regions, but in McAlester, Oklahoma, the civic pride group Pride in McAlester successfully fights this trend. In April 2013, they celebrated the end of a month's worth of community clean-up activities with a closed-street party for families. A team of five volunteers showed up from the nearby Narconon Arrowhead drug rehab facility to put their shoulders to the wheel as well.

“The goals of Narconon Arrowhead and Pride in McAlester are definitely aligned,” said John Bitinas, leader of the Narconon Arrowhead team of volunteers. “We are both dedicated to creating communities that are safer, more pleasant places for families to raise their children. That's why we were happy to help out.”

The event kicked off at 6 PM on Saturday, April 27th after Choctaw Avenue was closed off. It featured children's art activities, face painting, temporary tattoos and more. Bitinas said that his team of five volunteers was busy from the first moment they arrived at the downtown celebration site. After helping set up the event with its musical performers, rock wall, free food and family entertainments, the team was completely occupied manning the five children's bounce houses for the evening.

The McAlester celebration coincided with the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. In McAlester, families could take advantage of their attendance at this gathering to also dispose of any unneeded pills. Every person who dropped off pill bottles was rewarded with a coupon to use toward a snack purchase.

“We were glad to see that families could easily eliminate any unneeded prescription from their homes today,” Bitinas added. “This might seem a small step for a family to take but it creates a safer community with less drug abuse by our youth when these drugs are out of circulation.”

At the end of the night, the Narconon Arrowhead volunteers helped clean up the venue as hundreds of McAlester family members made their way home.

Pride in McAlester sponsors year-round community pride projects, including a recycling center to reduce waste, hazardous waste disposal projects and downtown beautification projects. “We were happy to stand shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors and support the civic pride of McAlester,” Bitinas concluded. “We look forward to more cooperative projects in the future.”
