Narcolepsy Network to Hold 29th Annual Conference in Denver October 17-19
Date:8/8/2014

North Kingstown, RI (PRWEB) August 08, 2014

Every year in October, Narcolepsy Network holds a conference for people with narcolepsy (PWNs) and their supporters and treating professionals. The conference brings PWNs together to hear from some of the world's leading narcolepsy researchers and doctors and to share experiences with one another. The 2014 conference will be October 17-19 in Denver. The Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center will host this year's conference.

The conference features workshops and presentations on a range of subjects including living with narcolepsy, treatment, research updates, and specialized presentations for children and young adults with narcolepsy. Among the scheduled speakers are:

  •     Dr. Todd J. Swick, medical director of Houston Sleep & Neurology
  •     Dr. Lawrence Scrima, director of the Sleep-Alertness Disorders Center in Aurora, CO
  •     Dr. Lois Krahn, sleep specialist at the Mayo Clinic
  •     Dr. Suresh Kotagal, pediatric neurologist at the Mayo Clinic
  •     Dr. Eve Rogers, neurologist
  •     Dr. Rubin Naiman, integrative sleep and dream medicine specialist at the University of Arizona’s Center for Integrative Medicine
  •     Nicole Jeray, LPGA golfer and narcolepsy advocate
  •     Linda Black, poet, writer and editor
  •     Sue Dambrauskas, NIA instructor
  •     Michelle McDonald, dietician

For those who attend, one of the most anticipated parts of the weekend is the fellowship with other people with narcolepsy. For many attendees, the conference is the first time they have ever met another person with narcolepsy. It is an educational and emotional experience that many previous attendees have said is a life-changing event. More than 400 people attended the 2013 conference in Atlanta.

Advanced registration is required. Early registration rates for the conference are $200 for Narcolepsy Network members and $150 for student members until August 31. Regular rates are $225 for members and $175 for student members. The non-member registration rate is $375. Registration will close October 12. Late registration may be available, space permitting. Registration includes access to all sessions and speakers, a welcome reception, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, and entertainment on Saturday night. More information and registration is available at http://www.narcolepsynetwork.org. An informational video is available at https://vimeo.com/101443066.

This year’s conference is sponsored by Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals and Flamel Technologies.

Narcolepsy is a medical disorder that impacts one in approximately 2,000 people in the United States. Many people are unaware of the condition and go undiagnosed. The disease is a sleep disorder, involving irregular patterns in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and significant disruptions of the normal sleep/wake cycle. While the cause of narcolepsy is not completely understood, current research points to a combination of genetic and environmental factors that influence the immune system.

Narcolepsy Network® is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing early diagnosis of narcolepsy, advocating for and supporting persons with narcolepsy and their families, and promoting critical research for treatment and a cure.
