HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On September 26, 2009 the 5th Annual Orange County NAMIWalks will be held at the Huntington Beach Pier. Among the 1000+ walkers will be the American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 Family team representing Veterans.
In 2008, NAMI-Orange County began Front Line conferences to provide important information on PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), traumatic brain injury (TBI), depression and suicide prevention for Veterans and families of returning Veterans. On September 26, Orange County Veterans and their families will be paying it forward by walking in the Fifth Annual NAMIWalks at Huntington Beach.
The proceeds of the 2009 NAMIWalks Orange County will be used to serve the needs of local individuals and families affected by mental health conditions including returning Veterans.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 families in Orange County are impacted by serious and persistent mental illness, which includes clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorders. Although treatable with medication and psychotherapy, these illnesses often result in severe functional limitations in the individual's interpersonal skills, personal care and cognitive processing.
Among Veterans, nearly 33 percent of those who have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan will experience mental health issues. In 2007, the suicide rate among veterans who served in the U.S. Army was at an all-time high. Approximately 40 percent of all homeless veterans live with a mental illness. Approximately 30 percent of veterans treated in the Veterans health system experienced depressive symptoms, two to three times the rate of the general population. NAMI Front Line offers hope and resources to Veterans and their loved ones.
According to Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen in Stars and Stripes, VA programs and the Defense Department must work more to reach out to community resources, finding ways for private charities and concerned citizens to help local veterans through the rehabilitation process.
NAMI Front Line is a starting point for Veterans in Orange County.
In addition to supporting NAMIWalks, The American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291 will welcome the 3rd NAMI-OC Veterans Front Line Conference to their post on November 14th( )between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM. ( )As with all NAMI-OC events, it will be free to the public.
