HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 5th Annual NAMIWalks Orange County will be held on September 26, 2009 at 9 AM at the Huntington Beach Pier.
This Saturday hundreds of Orange County residents will walk to raise funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Orange County (NAMI-OC) and raise awareness about mental health. The proceeds of this event will be used to serve the needs of local individuals and families affected by serious mental health conditions.
It is estimated that 1 in 5 families in Orange County are impacted by serious and persistent mental illness, which includes clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder. Although treatable with medication and psychotherapy, these illnesses often result in severe functional limitations in the individual's interpersonal skills, personal care and cognitive processing.
The mission of NAMI Orange County is to provide emotional support, education and resources for families, and those affected by mental health conditions. In collaboration with the entire community, NAMI advocates for a life of quality and dignity, one without discrimination, for all persons affected by mental illness.
NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America is a nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program that is being held in more than 80 communities around the country in 2009, including this Walk in Orange County.
NAMI-OC, affiliated with NAMI California and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, receives its funding from memberships, MHSA and from the community to provide services free to the public.
