August 26, 2013, marks the date My Positive Perspective aired an episode that talks of the healing potential water activities can have on children with autism. My Positive Perspective host Jason Deierlein was joined by Nancy Morris of Surfer’s Healing as the two discussed some of the benefits surfing and other activities can have on children with special needs. At the beginning of the episode, Deierlein asks Morris to comment on the day of the event itself. Morris says, “It’s a great day where we bring professional surfers and pair them with autistic children. For the children, it’s great having them out in the sand and water they get a sensory experience that they don’t get any other time. We have even experienced a child talk for the first time.”
Deierlein continues by stating a quote he remembered from a previous guest, “Jennifer Tokarev says, Movement heals children with autism. It’s that important.” Morris adds by saying, “A lot of these kids have problems with sensory processing, some respond well to touch some don’t, but they all need that extra movement. Even if it’s just rocking on the surfboard it’s going some good.”
While Morris is explaining all the benefits of Surfer’s Healing, she points out another thing, “The parents get to have this experience with the child that they otherwise wouldn’t have.” Deierlein ends the episode pointing out the main purpose of the event, “The movement allows the body to produce extra epergne they need to allow their body to live more normally.”
My Positive Perspective is a media outlet believing that improvement in our community will be best achieved by focusing on the good things happening in our world today. Having survived a near fatal car accident as a youth, a shift of perception forced one to have a mentality of always concentrating on the brighter sides of things. This was true, and in my book, Return From a Comatose Mind, this belief was put to the test. Appreciation for life was the biggest thing one took away from my brush with death, and it is because of that gives me such a huge desire to be helpful to many. My Positive Perspective is a way of overcoming challenges through positive thinking.
