On March 1, 2013 Brian Turner, a representative of fitness supplement retailer Muscular Development Store, responds to an article published by The Miami Herald advising people on the difference between supplements.
The Miami Herald reported that in 2011, the market for fitness supplements skyrocketed over $3.5 billion. The supplement market, according to The Miami Herald, is growing rapidly at more than 10 percent each year.
As a sports nutrition teacher for UHealth Sports Medicine at the University of Miami, Anthony Musto, Ph.D., said nutrition supplements are a huge industry. “And staying on top of what’s the hot supplement is like trying to stay on top of computer games or video games. Every day there’s something new,” he told The Miami Herald.
Musto recommends people should look to food to get the nutrients they need instead of resorting to supplements.
Brian Turner, a spokesperson for the Muscular Development Store, said getting the nutrients you need from food is more complicated than what Musto suggests.
“Vegetarians or even people trying to cut out meat for a few days a week could benefit from using protein supplements,” Turner said. “The proteins and amino acids found in supplements like Gaspari Nutrition could help build muscle fibers and tone the body. If you’re only eating vegetables, you’re not going to get the wide variety of proteins available in meat. Taking a protein supplement can help with that.”
The Miami Herald described creatine, a natural substance found to enhance performance.
Turner said many people use creatine to increase their endurance during intense workouts similar to nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, according to Turner, opens blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can be dangerous. “Nitrous oxide can cause heart complications, so it’s better to stick to creatine if you want to get more out of your workout,” he said. “But before taking any nutrition supplement, always get a professional’s opinion.”
