On April 4, 2013, Muscular Development magazine responds to an article posted by the Institute of Food Technologists, which details a new study suggesting rice protein may be just as beneficial as whey protein for vegetarian bodybuilders.
According to the Institute of Food Technologies (IFT), a study recently presented at the Natural Products Expo demonstrated that rice protein might have the same physical benefits as whey protein.
Brian Turner, a spokesperson for the Muscular Development Magazine, says after looking at the fat content versus protein content, it’s easy to see that whey protein is similar to rice protein. “While rice protein generally has a higher number of calories, it has the same total fat count per serving as whey protein,” he says. “They also have the same protein content per serving. The biggest dietary difference is carbohydrate content, in which rice has more.”
The IFT study, conducted by researchers at the University of Tampa, examined a group of 24 expert bodybuilders and divided them into two groups. The first group consumed rice protein and the second group consumed whey protein before performing specific training exercises over an eight-week period. After measuring muscle thickness, body composition, bench press and leg press strength, researchers found that there were no significant differences in progress.
