Murayama Appointed Chair of Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital

Kenric M. Murayama, M.D., FACS, has been named surgeon-in-chief and chair of the Department of Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH), effective June 1, 2013.

Dr. Murayama comes to AMH from Penn Presbyterian Medical Center where he currently serves as chief of the Department of Surgery and associate program director of the General Surgery Residency Program of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is one of the most highly respected foregut surgeons in the nation.

According to John J. Kelly, M.D., chief of staff, Abington Memorial Hospital, “Dr. Murayama has distinguished himself through his clinical, educational and academic excellence. He is an individual of high character and high professional standards, and we look forward to his leadership of the Department of Surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital.”

Dr. Murayama earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington and his medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. At Northwestern University School of Medicine, he completed both a residency in general surgery and a research fellowship in pancreatic physiology.

Dr. Murayama has published extensively in the academic and scientific literature, and he has a leadership role in several national organizations, including the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Southwestern Surgical Congress.

Dr. Murayama will continue his practice of gastrointestinal surgery with a specific interest in diseases of the esophagus and stomach, hernias and surgery to treat obesity.
