Multiple States Crack Down on Heroin Epidemic
Date:7/25/2014

USA (PRWEB) July 25, 2014

As reported by the Statesman Journal in the article Scanning The Battlefield in War On Heroin (7/20), police in Salem, MA as well as several other states are beginning to seriously crack down on the recent heroin epidemic that has taken many lives during the past couple of years. The article focuses on one heroin-related overdose case in which police were able to make two arrests by following clues found in the victim's cell phone. By pretending to be the victim and claiming to want to buy more heroin, the two suspects who originally sold the victim the fatal dose of heroin were both prosecuted. In many states, prosecutions have began to actively press charges against alleged drug dealers in fatal overdose cases. In Florida, police forces have recently cut back on their special forces and increased their number of patrol officers in an attempt to increase vigilance and find more dealers.

Delaware has began to implement a new strategy in which police are trying to stop heroin overdoses before they can even happen. The state believes that if they can crack down on other unlawful crime, such as panhandling, prostitution, public drinking, and loitering, they can in turn help decrease the number of heroin-related crimes and deaths from occurring. Many law enforcement agencies throughout the United States agree that many opiate addictions stem not from heroin itself but from the misuse of prescription opiates when a person incurs an injury. However, in light of that knowledge, there have been more attempts to educate both children and adults on the importance of taking medicines correctly.
