The best bodyweight ab exercises are always being discovered through new and unique bodyweight training programs, but according to Mike Whitfield, the creator behind a four-week bodyweight conditioning workout plan called “Bodyweight Torch,” many of the classic exercises should still be used.
“The Mountain Climber ab exercise is a great way to improve conditioning as well as improve core stability and strength. To perform the mountain climber ab exercise, you simply put yourself in the pushup position, keep your shoulders back and shuffle your feet back and forth while keeping your abs braced during the movement. This will not only improve core strength and stability while improving overall conditioning, but it’s also a great way to improve coordination, too. The mountain climber exercise is a staple in many of my bodyweight training programs because they work. People can spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on expensive equipment that supposedly works the abs, but the truth is that the best ab exercises can be found using just body weight. Bodyweight workouts that work all the major muscle groups along with strength exercises that improve core stability are the best way to get rid of belly fat and shrink the waistline. I like to have my clients perform 12-20 reps per side if they are going at a fast pace, but to add more of a challenge, people can perform the mountain climber exercise at a much slower pace. This will allow the abs to actually work harder and if done at this pace, it’s best to stick with 8-12 reps per side and then progress from there,” said Whitfield, the creator behind the popular bodyweight program.
