Mouli Cohen, a successful entrepreneur and technology investor, weighs in on this thoughtful project for our ever-aging population.

California (PRWEB) April 20, 2010 -- Towards the end of 2008, IBM Israel began collaborating in a three year project with partners in the European Union to create software that would help to maintain the cognitive abilities of the elderly. Recently, the Hermes Cognitive Care for Active Aging project has resulted in an assistive technology that combines the functional skills of the elderly to reduce age-related decline of cognitive capabilities.

Mouli Cohen, a successful entrepreneur and technology investor, weighs in on this thoughtful project for our ever-aging population.

The concept of personal organizing through software is not new. But what makes this effort unique, Cohen points out, are two things: The first is that it capitalizes on the IBM Israel's previous pioneering efforts in speech recognition technologies. Indeed, the Israel team, which closely collaborates with IBM in America and around the world, is headed by three speech recognition experts. The second is that it's not only a day-to-day assistive software but it acts as long term memory aid as well, using information from daily life to help users remember what needs to be remembered, and using facts from their background to quiz them about their own life's events.

With regards to speech recognition, "It can be argued that Israel has been leading the way since the turn of the millennia with companies like Natural Speech Communication," Cohen said. In 2001, this prompted IBM to use Hebrew and its "special language characteristics" to close the gap between the limited numbers of available major languages developed in large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) and other languages with similar special needs.
