Motivational Speaker Facilitates Teen Bullying Survey
Date:4/16/2013

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) April 16, 2013

Nationally renowned motivational youth speaker Scott Greenberg facilitated a bullying awareness activity for 400 teen leaders from California's Riverside and San Bernardino Counties attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards conference sponsored by Rotary District 5330. The activity allowed students to explore the problem of bullying through an informal group survey.

Teens were divided into 40 groups and asked to create a survey question related to bullying. Once each group created their question, they spent ten minutes mingling with other groups and collecting responses to their question. Students were instructed to note which groups' questions they'd already answered to ensure their responses would not be replicated in the same group's data. Each group was able to survey at least 25% of the 400 students present, though each group's pool of respondents was unique, depending on whom they mingled with during the ten-minute timeframe.

“With all the current attention the media is placing on bullying, we wanted to give students a chance to report from their own experience,” says Greenberg, who was one of three motivational speakers hired by the Rotary district to present motivational keynotes, icebreakers and leadership workshops at their annual teen conference. “With a diverse group of 400 students from all over Southern California, we were able to quickly compile some very interesting data.”

After collecting responses, students returned to their small groups and compiled their statistics. Though many groups asked the same question, responses varied based on how their version of the question was worded, and on the specific pool of students they surveyed. Each group then presented their data.

The survey indicated that student leaders are more likely than not to intervene when they see bullying. 77% said they’ve acted against bullying at least once in the last year. 73% admitted that they themselves have bullied someone. While 56% of the students believe that in-person bullying is more severe than cyber bullying, most questions asking where the majority of bullying takes place suggested it’s most prevalent on the Internet. According to several versions of the same question, bullying seems to happen most in middle school, compared to elementary or high school.

The bullying survey results can be found at http://www.scottgreenberg.com/2013-ryla-bullying-survey/ .

The purpose of this informal survey was to allow teens to share their experience and perspectives on bullying and promote dialogue. After discussing the results with the large group, student returned to their small groups to brainstorm ways to address bullying back at their schools.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) conference was held on April 12-14, 2013 at the Thousand Pines Christian Camp in Crestline, CA.
