(PRWEB) July 6, 2010 -- Singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae has joined Oscar-winning actor Ben Kingsley and acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton as the latest famous faces to lend their support to Hear the World, the global initiative launched by hearing aid manufacturer Phonak to raise awareness about the importance of hearing and the consequences of hearing loss.

The three new supporters will join a host of other celebrity ambassadors including Jude Law, Elle Macpherson, Annie Lennox, Sting and Peter Gabriel. Each supporter has been photographed by musician and photographer Bryan Adams holding the Hear the World pose - with one hand cupped behind their ear to convey conscious hearing.

More than 800 million people worldwide, or 16 percent of the world's population, have hearing loss, with experts predicting that number to increase to 1.1 billion by 2015. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 31 million people have hearing loss and according to the Better Hearing Institute (BHI) more than 6 million are between the ages of 18 and 44. While often undetected or neglected, hearing loss can become a social and emotional barrier for the individuals suffering from it or the families of those it affects.

"Being able to hear and communicate is an invaluable gift,” said Corinne Bailey Rae. “Being a musician, hearing is of paramount importance and to lose that gift would be very hard for me."

Hear the World, launched in 2006 by leading hearing systems manufacturer Phonak, aims to call attention to the importance of taking care of your hearing, preventing hearing loss in later life, as well as the social and emotional impact of hearing loss and the solutions available for those who suffer. In the context of Hear the World, Phonak has established the non-profit Hear the World Foundation to improve the quality of life of people with hearing loss through financial and technical assistance. The foundation is committed to the prevention of hearing loss as well as the support of people with hearing loss and their families.
