Mission Pharmacal Congratulates Exemplary Women's Health Researchers

rsity of Texas School of Nursing, Austin, in Women's Health with an additional portfolio in Women's and Gender Studies. Her winning abstract entry is titled, "Use of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine to treat vasomotor symptoms among a sample of menopausal women who have discontinued hormone therapy." The study examined the use and perceived efficacy of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies for menopausal women who have discontinued hormone therapy, and found that of those women using CAM therapies, less than half felt their treatment choices were helpful in relieving menopausal symptoms. She noted that these findings highlight the importance of health care providers remaining informed of the benefits, risks and current research of CAM therapies in order to best serve their patients.

Kupferer began her career in nursing 29 years ago, beginning as an RN in labor and delivery, with progressive management roles up to the director level. Additionally, she has had 10 years of experience in private practice as a women's health care nurse practitioner, has taught at the graduate level and is currently in Medical Affairs within the bioscience industry. Kupferer's doctoral educational and research interests include menopause, health promotion in older women and contraception.

Margaret F. Moloney, RN-C, PhD, ANP

Margaret Moloney, RN-C, PhD, ANP, is an associate professor at the Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. Her winning abstract entry, "Migraines and Hysterectomy," outlines her study of middle-aged women who received hysterectomies without consideration for their migraines, a common practice. Her research indicated that hysterectomy may actually cause the worsening of migraines, and called for clinicians to consider a woman's migraines when recommending hysterectomy and to abandon the practice of recommending hysterectomy as a treatment.
