Midbrook Assists Local Hospital with Fall Kit Production
Date:1/15/2010

A major concern of hospitals is keeping their patients safe while within their facility. To help achieve this goal, many medical facilities issue special kits complete with risk identifiers to patients that may present a higher risk of falling while in the facility. A “fall prevention kit” can be issued to certain patients that, for a variety of reasons, have a higher than normal risk of being injured due a fall. (Vocus) January 15, 2010 -- A major concern of hospitals is keeping their patients safe while within their facility. To help achieve this goal, many medical facilities issue special kits complete with risk identifiers to patients that may present a higher risk of falling while in the facility.

A “fall prevention kit” can be issued to certain patients that, for a variety of reasons, have a higher than normal risk of being injured due a fall. These kits can help keep patients safer by making it easier for staff to be aware of patients who are potential risks, and help limit injuries suffered in the hospitals that can be costly and dangerous.

Recently, a local Jackson, MI hospital came to Midbrook Medical for their fall prevention kit production. Previously, the facility had been using volunteers to assemble the fall kits. While volunteer labor is inexpensive for the hospital, it did present challenges. The production, delivery, and on hand inventory of kits was often unpredictable.

“Midbrook had previously helped us in designing and fabricating a custom stainless steel operating room cabinet which turned out especially well,” said an Allegiance health representative.

“Midbrook’s desire to expand their business model was once again there to help us when we needed to package and assemble our new kit,” the representative added.

“We discovered Midbrook in Jackson, MI had the capability and capacity to work with us in order to meet our needs.”

Midbrook provided the hospital with a detailed plan of how they would be assembling the kits. With work instructions and inspection experienced gained through years of work with the automotive companies, Midbrook is more than capable of delivering high quality kits on a regular schedule.

Midbrook takes on the responsibility purchasing all items for the kit, stocking the inventory necessary to assemble the needed number of kits completely and delivery in a timely basis. All the items are brought to Midbrook, where production workers assemble the kits into their packaging by following a detailed set of work instructions.

Anti-tamper precautions are added to the sealed bags, and they are placed into delivery crates and carefully tracked.

Statistics on hospital falls are difficult to pin down, but it is commonly agreed that older patients and overweight patients are among those most at risk. According to the CDC in 2005, a total of 15,802 persons aged 65 years or greater died as a result of injuries from falls either in their home, a hospital, or other facility. Thousands of others seek treatment due to non-fatal falls.

Hospitals know that these patients are at risk, and they have different methods for helping to minimize the potential injuries to their patients.

Fall prevention kits are an inexpensive way to help staff and patients both minimize the risk of injuries caused by falls in the hospital.
