Michigan Quality Council (MQC) Names Henry Ford Health System 2007 State Quality Award Recipient

State's highest honor for organizational performance excellence

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Quality Council (MQC) announces Henry Ford Health System as a 2007 Quality Leadership Award recipient.

The Michigan Quality Leadership Award is the highest honor for organizational performance excellence in the state. It is awarded after a rigorous review by a team of examiners who perform a comprehensive site visit and then submit a report for final evaluation to an independent panel of judges.

The MQC's Leadership award program is modeled after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Leadership program. Both programs evaluate an organization for excellence in seven categories of performance: leadership; strategic planning customer focus; measurement, analysis and knowledge management; staff focus; process management; and organizational results. Participating organizations receive a feedback report identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement; those who demonstrate mature processes and outstanding results may become award recipients.

"HFHS has demonstrated systematic implementation of processes that achieve results for all its stakeholders: patients, their families, physicians, employees, and the community," said Geri Markley, executive director, Michigan Quality Council. "HFHS took a bold step in implementing these processes across the entire system to provide consistent, high quality care wherever a patient is touched. HFHS is a role model for other organizations in Michigan and in health care."

"The energy and passion for excellence that Henry Ford team members are known for has really shone through," says Nancy M. Schlichting, HFHS President and CEO about the System's recognition by the MQC. "This has been an exceptional year for Henry Ford Health System. We've experienced significant growth with the acquisition of two community hospitals and have taken great strides in improving service and providing quality care. This award by MQC affirms that Henry Ford Health System is among the best of the best in health care and is a wonderful recognition of our team members' selfless contributions and dedication to our patients each day."

HFHS provides a full continuum of health care services primarily to residents of Southeast Michigan, including Detroit and surrounding suburban areas. Established in 1915 by auto pioneer Henry Ford as a single Detroit hospital staffed by the Henry Ford Medical Group, Henry Ford has evolved into one of the nation's leading comprehensive, integrated health systems. The health system includes acute, post-acute, specialty, primary and preventive care services supported by clinical education and research. Henry Ford is comprised of a network of hospitals, ambulatory medical centers, nursing homes, and specialty, retail and community outreach. Health Alliance Plan, Henry Ford's insurance organization, serves more than 2,800 employer groups and 560,000 members. For more information, visit

The MQC was created in 1993 by business and government leaders to promote performance excellence practices that achieve results in business, education, healthcare, and non-profit organizations throughout Michigan. The primary service of the Council is to provide feedback to organizations, culminating in recognizing top Michigan performers. The MQC is now affiliated with Cleary University.
