Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Lawyers Note New Study Finding MRIs Can Be Used to Predict Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Failure

The nationwide law firm of Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes that a new study has found that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be used to predict metal-on-metal hip replacement failure, regardless of whether or not patients are experiencing symptoms. According to an article published on May 15th in the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, MRI detected synovitis (tissue damage) in 68% of asymptomatic patients screened. In patients suffering symptoms due to mechanical causes, the detection rate was 75%, while MRIs were able to detect damage in 78% of patients reporting unexplained pain.*

Any tool that can help detect failing metal-on-metal hip implants at the earliest stage possible is an important step forward in helping those suffering complications due to these products,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant Complication
Metal-on-metal hip implants have been the subject of safety concerns since the August 2010 DePuy ASR hip recall.** Since 2011, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has been reviewing the safety of all-metal hips, amid concerns that metal ions shed from such devices could lead to serious complications, including the formation of psuedotumors, metallosis, and early device failure.
