Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on New Study Finding Increased Metal Ion Levels May Predict Problems with Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacements
Date:3/16/2013

metal-on-metal hip replacements may cause damage to bone and/or soft tissue surrounding the implant and joint. Metal ions released from all-metal hips can also travel through the bloodstream, where they may cause symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body (systemic reactions). Among other things, the FDA cautioned doctors to be aware that certain patients may be at risk for increased device wear and/or adverse local tissue reactions and should be followed more closely. However, while the FDA advised metal ion testing for patients experiencing problems with their implant, the agency has not recommended routine blood tests for all metal hip implant patients.**

Bernstein Liebhard LLP is representing hundreds of clients allegedly injured as a result of metal hip implant components. The firm is actively filing DePuy ASR hip recall lawsuits in the multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation – MDL 2197) Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner, Jeffrey S. Grand, is also serving on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for a second multidistrict litigation established in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas for metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement lawsuits. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation - MDL No. 2244)

In addition, the firm is representing metal-on-metal hip implant clients in Biomet hip replacement lawsuits in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Indiana (In re: Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2391), and is filing claims in a multicounty litigation rec
