Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Comments on New Study Finding Increased Metal Ion Levels May Predict Problems with Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacements
Date:3/16/2013

New York, New York (PRWEB) March 16, 2013

A new study has found that metal-on-metal hip implant patients with high levels of metal ions in their blood may face a serious risk of complications, even if they are not experiencing any symptoms that would indicate their hip is failing, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. According to the study, which appears online at BMJ Open, elevated blood metal ion concentrations were associated with early failure of metal-on-metal hip replacements secondary to adverse reactions to metal debris. Cobalt concentrations greater than 20 µg/l were frequently associated with metal staining of tissues and the development of osteolysis. The study also found that female patients, as well as those fitted with DePuy ASR hips, appeared to be at greater risk from equivalent doses of metal debris. According to the study authors, their findings provide the “first evidence that blood metal ion tests can be used as a clinical indicator of the risk of early joint failure in asymptomatic patients” *

“This study is not surprising at all. It echoes what many of our own metal-on-metal hip implant clients have experienced. It adds to the growing body of research that points to a link between high metal ions and the problems seen in metal-on-metal hip recipients," says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing the victims of defective drugs and medical devices. The Firm continues to offer free legal evaluations to victims of failed metal-on-metal hip replacements.

Metal-on-Metal Hip Replacement Lawsuits
Metal-on-metal hip implants consist of a ball and cup made from chromium-cobalt alloy. In a Safety Communication issued on January 17th, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that the metal ions shed from metal-on-metal hip replacements may cause damage to bone and/or soft tissue surrounding the implant and joint. Metal ions released from all-metal hips can also travel through the bloodstream, where they may cause symptoms or illnesses elsewhere in the body (systemic reactions). Among other things, the FDA cautioned doctors to be aware that certain patients may be at risk for increased device wear and/or adverse local tissue reactions and should be followed more closely. However, while the FDA advised metal ion testing for patients experiencing problems with their implant, the agency has not recommended routine blood tests for all metal hip implant patients.**

Bernstein Liebhard LLP is representing hundreds of clients allegedly injured as a result of metal hip implant components. The firm is actively filing DePuy ASR hip recall lawsuits in the multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Ohio. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. ASR Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation – MDL 2197) Bernstein Liebhard LLP partner, Jeffrey S. Grand, is also serving on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for a second multidistrict litigation established in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas for metal-on-metal DePuy Pinnacle hip replacement lawsuits. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation - MDL No. 2244)

In addition, the firm is representing metal-on-metal hip implant clients in Biomet hip replacement lawsuits in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Indiana (In re: Biomet M2a Magnum Hip Implant Products Liability Litigation – MDL No. 2391), and is filing claims in a multicounty litigation recently established in New Jersey Superior Court for claims involving the Stryker Rejuvenate hip recall. (In re Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Stem and the ABG II Modular Hip Stem Litigation, No. 296) Free case evaluations are also being offered to individuals affected by the June 2012 Smith & Nephew metal liner recall, as well as those who have experienced problems allegedly due to Wright Profemur and Conserve metal hip implants.

Victims of metal-on-metal hip implants may be entitled to compensation for their medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages.
