SAN FRANCISCO, June 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Blue Shield of California announced today the appointment of Meredith Mathews, M.D. as senior vice president and chief medical officer. Dr. Mathews will oversee all of Blue Shield's health care services, including prevention & wellness programs, disease & case management, maternity management, pharmacy benefits management, medical policies, centers of excellence, clinical quality, transparency strategies, and utilization management.

Dr. Mathews joins Blue Shield with over 20 years experience in health plan management. Most recently, Dr. Mathews served as chief medical officer for DaVita VillageHealth, where he oversaw the company's disease and care management programs for patients with end stage renal disease and chronic kidney disease. Prior to DaVita, Dr. Mathews was chief medical officer for LifeMasters Supported Self Care Inc, a disease management company. Earlier in his career, Dr. Mathews was a principal at Dorsey Health Strategies LLC, and chief medical officer at Medica Health Plan in Minnesota and Premera Blue Cross of Washington and Alaska. Dr. Mathews also practiced nephrology in Seattle for 18 years and served as Associate Professor of Medicine at the
