Mercy Primary Care Center Receives $15,000 in Matching Grants for Diabetes Management Program,

Grants from Metro Health Foundation and Trinity Health will be used to provide eye exams to uninsured diabetic patients.

Detroit, MI (Vocus) December 7, 2009 -- Mercy Primary Care Center of Detroit (MPCC) received a grant award of $7,500 from the Metro Health Foundation of Detroit for the center’s diabetes management program serving uninsured residents in the city. In an effort to maximize the number of patients who will be treated within this program, MPCC also received a matching grant from Trinity Health’s Institute for Health and Community Benefits, bringing the total grant awarded to $15,000.

MPCC will use this grant to provide medical eye exams to uninsured diabetic patients in collaboration with the Optometric Institute and Clinic of Detroit. Medical eye exams are a crucial part of the continuum of care for those patients with diabetes. Without proper vision care, complications can arise for the patient, including retinopathy, cataracts and the need for laser surgery.

MPCC is a health center serving the needs of Detroit’s uninsured. The center acts as a “medical home” for uninsured adults who require health care services to improve their quality of life. MPCC seeks to eliminate barriers to comprehensive care by providing laboratory, diagnostic testing, limited specialty care, health education, pharmaceuticals and transportation free of charge.

Dedicated to treating the whole person-body, mind, and spirit- MPCC is a member of Trinity Health, Michigan’s leading health care provider and one of the state’s largest employers.

The Trinity Health Institute for Health and Community Benefits focuses on improving public health in Trinity Health communities, including chronic disease prevention and management among poor and vulnerable populations, eliminating inequities and disparities in health and healthcare services, and improving access to healthy environments and health care services for all.

Metro Health Foundation is a private grant-making foundation supporting Michigan organizations in health care and health-related fields.
