Medtronic Takes the Lead in the US Spinal Implant Market, Reports iData Research
Date:5/28/2013

Vancouver, BC (PRWEB) May 28, 2013

According to a series of reports published this year by iData Research, the U.S. total spinal implant market was worth over $5.5 billion, with the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) spinal implant market comprising $1.5 billion of that value. MIS spinal implants include spinous process fixation, facet fixation, MIS interbody fusion, pedicle screws, spine endoscopes, and sacroiliac joint fusion, the fastest growing segment. Throughout the last few years, the MIS spinal surgery market has grown at a high rate as MIS techniques have become more popular. This market is expected to maintain double-digit growth rates in the future.

The fastest growing population segment in the U.S. has comprised those over the age of 65. Since the majority of spinal fusions are performed to treat degenerative diseases that are often associated with age, the growing elderly population will cause an increase in the number of annual fusion procedures performed. Studies have shown that over 80% of the population will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. A majority of these cases can be attributed to two main causes: general factors such as muscle strain, injury and overuse; and specific spine conditions such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis. Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction was once thought to be a less common cause for lower back pain. However, recent studies have shown that SI joint dysfunction (SIJD) may be responsible for up to 25% of lower back pain cases.

With the notion that up to a quarter of lower back pain incidents can be attributed to the SI joint, there was an inherent need for an effective and efficient treatment for SIJD. “The call was answered with the introduction SI-BONE’s iFuse Implant System® (iFuse®),” explains Dr. Kamran Zamanian, CEO of iData, “the first minimally invasive system on the market geared towards SI fusion.” SI-BONE received FDA approval to market its iFuse® implants in November 2008. Since its commercial release, the system has contributed to a significant growth in the U.S. SI fusion market. In the last couple of years, Zyga Technology received its 510(k) clearance for the SImmetry™, Globus Medical received 510(k) for the SI-LOK® implant, and SIGNUS Medical is expected to enter the market with the DIALOG™ (or DIANA™ as it is known in European markets). The emergence of additional competitor products will continue to drive growth in this market as awareness of the procedures becomes increasingly rampant though the marketing efforts of these companies.

Medtronic is currently the market leader in the total and MIS spinal implant device markets mostly due to its lead in the thoracolumbar and cervical fixation, and interbody fusion segments, as well as their minimally invasive interbody fusion and pedicle screw markets with their MAST and CD Horizon® portfolios of MIS products. Medtronic’s share in each of these segments collectively put the company at the forefront of the market. Other competitors reported by iData that command significant shares in the spinal implant market include DePuy Synthes, Stryker, Zimmer, and Globus Medical, all of which compete directly with Medtronic in a number of spinal implant segments.
