Medtronic Neurostimulator: An Implantable Device Grants Warren Man New Lease on Life
Date:6/14/2013

Youngstown, OH (PRWEB) June 14, 2013

Warren native Dana Toro always led an active life. However, in the early 1980s, chronic pain from several work-related back injuries and other medical challenges began to limit his mobility. Today Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) is happy to announce that Dana is experiencing much less pain thanks to his doctors and a small implantable electronic device manufactured by Medtronic that dramatically lessens his chronic pain.

A history of injuries, degenerative disc disease, and the onset of spinal stenosis forced Dana to undergo extensive spinal reconstruction in March 2011. The eight-hour surgery was a success and although his back was now structurally sound, Dana lived with chronic pain. Medications were an option, but left him feeling sluggish, irritable, and unable to function. That is when Dana’s doctors suggested the benefits of a neurostimulator.

A neurostimulator is a surgically implanted device that delivers mild electrical signals to the epidural space near the spine. The electrical signals cause a tingling sensation at the location of the pain. It relieves pain by blocking the pain messages before they reach the brain.

Philip Starr, DO, Dana’s primary care physician at St. Joseph Community Care Center in Warren, was instrumental in the process. “Not every patient is a candidate for a neurostimulator, but it was a great solution for Dana,” says Dr. Starr. “I am very pleased with his progress and truly believe that this is a therapy that can help a great number of people.”

“We’ve seen some great results with patients using the neurostimulator,” says Kene Ugokwe, MD, neurosurgeon, HMHP. “It returns quality of life. Patients are able to get back to their lives without chronic pain and without additional prescription pain medications.”

For Dana, the neurostimulator has been a real gift. Although unable to return to a fully active lifestyle, the device enables him freedom from pain to do everyday tasks and enjoy his grandchildren.

“It’s been an amazing journey,” says Dana. “The neurostimulator is adjustable, so if I feel a little extra pain, I can adjust it. Being able to adjust the stimulator to relieve the pain without having to take another pain pill has been great.”
