Meditec Instructor and Student Nominated in Prestigious Medical Transcription Profession Awards

Austin, TX (PRWEB) July 22, 2014

Two individuals from Meditec, a trademark of, have been nominated for the 2014 Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) Awards. One nominee is Meditec’s medical transcription instructor, Audrey Kirchner, who is the sole nominee for both the Excellence in Credentialing and the Educator of the Year awards. Her student, Linda Curia, is also nominated for the Rising Star Award.

Audrey has worked in the medical transcription field for over 18 years in a wide-variety of roles, including being a transcriptionist and owning her own transcription service company. She also has a wealth of education experience, including developing curricula; producing continuing-education and instructional webinars for students; and teaching at a community college. Two years ago, she joined Meditec and redesigned its latest version of the medical terminology and medical transcription curricula. She was instrumental in making Meditec an AHDI-approved school.

With of Audrey’s contributions to the industry, the AHDI nominated her for the AHDI Excellence in Credentialing and Educator of the Year awards. The Excellence in Credentialing Award is given to a credentialed professional who have demonstrated a unique and measurable contribution to the medical transcription industry. The Educator of the Year Award recognizes a professional member who has distinguished himself or herself in medical transcription education, either as an educational program instructor, a contributor to AHDI educational initiatives or online or on-site continuing education programs instructor for AHDI members or the industry.

Meditec’s other nominee is Linda Curia, a student of Audrey’s and graduate the Medical Transcription program. After being laid off, Linda realized she wanted to take the opportunity to switch fields and learn a new skill. Towards the end of her program, she learned about the Rising Star Award from Audrey and decided to apply.

AHDI’s Rising Star Award is given to an outstanding student for a reflective and educated response to its annual essay contest. It is open to students who are actively enrolled in a program on healthcare documentation or a related field. The 2014 topic was “How Does Attitude + Commitment=Excellence” to which Linda wrote,

“We must always remain the student, ever learning! If we remain committed to our roles and always strive to do it right the first time, we will achieve the highest level of personal excellence; and in doing so, we will also ensure that our healthcare institution achieves the highest level of excellence by providing the best possible care to each and every patient.”

About AHDI
The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) was established in 1978 as part of an effort to achieve recognition for the medical transcription profession. In the beginning, the association focused on educating medical professionals about what medical transcriptionists do and how their work affects the quality of health care. When the U.S. Department of Labor granted medical transcriptionists their own job classification in 1999, it was an important milestone to getting the work recognized as much more than clerical. In 2012, AHDI adopted a new title -- healthcare documentation specialists -- to reflect the broad and extensive responsibilities and services they provide in the creation of accurate and comprehensive patient care records.
