Medina General Hospital and University Hospitals Agree to Pursue Affiliation

MEDINA, Ohio, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Medina General Hospital and University Hospitals announced today that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which Medina General has indicated its desire to pursue becoming the newest member of the University Hospitals' network of community- based hospitals. The agreement is subject to a due diligence review period along with final regulatory and governance approvals.

"We're excited about the prospect of joining with University Hospitals, one of the leading health care systems in the country," said Gary Hallman, President and CEO of Medina General Hospital. "Our Board gave serious consideration over many months to this decision, looking at several partnership options. The Board determined that an affiliation agreement with University Hospitals would provide the best opportunities for the greater Medina community and our hospital."

"Medina General will be a strong addition to our successful network of community hospitals serving Northeast Ohio," said Thomas F. Zenty III, Chief Executive Officer of University Hospitals. "We look forward to building on Medina General's record of excellence in servicing the community's health care needs and continuing to support the private practice physicians who have provided superior patient care to the residents of Medina County."

The agreement outlines a number of potential opportunities to broaden health care services at Medina General, including the development of an enhanced primary care network and expanded critical care program, the development of new health care services, new medical staff development initiatives, educational programs, research, and access to University Hospitals' nationally recognized centers of excellence. In addition, University Hospitals will work with Medina General to develop new ambulatory, preventative and wellness programs, as well as new facilities to meet the needs of patients in Medina General's service area.
