Just about any bodyweight training program includes a variety of pushups, but according to Mike Whitfield, a trainer based in Dallas, GA that uses a variety of bodyweight conditioning circuits with his coaching clients, there’s one pushup that is not used enough.
“The medicine ball pushup is a great way to make the standard pushup more challenging. By keeping your hands on a medicine ball, the core will have to stabilize and the abs are being worked much harder than a standard pushup. This unique bodyweight chest exercise is a great way to improve upper body strength and improve conditioning. It is similar to a close-grip pushup, but because the hands are on an unstable surface, this will work the shoulders, chest and triceps much harder. Because our readers like new ideas to use with their bodyweight training programs and bodyweight conditioning programs, we released a video explaining the medicine ball pushup. Whenever unique bodyweight exercises are utilized with a bodyweight conditioning program, it’s much easier to stick to the program and be consistent with exercise.
