Medical Mutual is the First Ohio Health Plan to Receive NCQA Wellness & Health Accreditation
Date:2/2/2010

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has granted Wellness & Health Promotion (WHP) Accreditation to Medical Mutual of Ohio, the first health plan in Ohio to complete the survey process for NCQA's new program.

Medical Mutual's wellness program is one of only 15 in the United States to receive NCQA's WHP Accreditation.

WHP is a comprehensive assessment of key areas of health promotion, which include implementing wellness programs in the workplace, providing services to help participants develop skills to make healthy choices and safeguarding the personal health information of its members.

"Medical Mutual of Ohio is a model for offering wellness programs that can improve employee health and control costs," said Margaret E. O'Kane, NCQA president. "Wellness and Health Promotion Accreditation distinguishes organizations that effectively implement workplace wellness programs, partner with quality vendors and protect employees' privacy."

Paula Sauer, vice president of Care Management at Medical Mutual, said the WHP accreditation clearly establishes Medical Mutual as a leader in the growing wellness market. "Receiving this accreditation means our wellness initiatives meet the nation's highest evidence based, best-in-class standards for value and quality, as well as demonstrating our value to employers and their workforce," said Sauer.

Sauer also said the accreditation is significant because employers today are demanding greater value for their health-plan dollars. "Our wellness programs are delivering that value," said Sauer. "Customers want us to be their wellness partner and to help them improve their employees' health. They know that a healthy workforce contributes to a healthier bottom line."

Organizations interested in WHP Accreditation are encouraged to contact NCQA Customer Support at (888) 275-7585.
