Mediaplanet Launches “Heroin Addiction” Campaign, Bringing Awareness, Resources and Hope to a Nation Enduring a Troubling Epidemic

Led by the CDC’s newly released guidelines, the campaign focuses on a huge range of topics, from safe medication disposal to non-opioid treatments for pain, the connection between prescription drugs and heroin addiction, long-term recovery to medication-assisted treatment (MAT), naloxone access and also the all-too-common link between mental illness and medication addiction.

“Heroin Addiction” is a print and online campaign, distributed within this weekend’s edition of USA Today in Boston, Chicago, New York, D.C., Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland, with a circulation of approximately 250,000 copies and an estimated readership of 750,000. The print component will also be featured at several industry events, including the National Council for Behavioral Health Hill Day (June 6-7), The Opioid Crisis: Strategies for Treatment and Recovery Conference (June 23-24), and the National Conference on Addiction Disorders (August 18-21). Both the Opioid Crisis Conference and the NCAD are hosted by the prominent addiction publisher Vendome Publishing.

The digital component of the campaign is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. The digital homepage and cover of the print publication features White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Director—aka “Drug Czar”—Michael Botticelli. In an exclusive interview, he discusses the origins of the heroin epidemic in the United States, and offers hope and advice for achieving long-term recovery. The first in his position to also be a recovering addict, Director Botticelli also stresses the importance of naloxone access and medication-assisted treatment as crucial to solving this crisis. Joining him in this campaign are Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.
