Media arrangements for the International Congress on Obesity

Excess body weight is a major risk factor for several chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer, making obesity one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. The condition is considered one of the most significant public health challenges of the 21st century.

The International Congress on Obesity provides a unique international forum for the presentation of new research on the entire spectrum of the obesity field, including:

  • The determinants and consequences of obesity
  • New options for treatment, prevention and public health intervention
  • Social and political issues relating to obesity
  • Prevalence and trends
  • Fat tissue activity
  • The latest thinking in diet, physical activity and behaviour science

News briefings have been scheduled for the following times:
Monday 12 July: 12.30 hrs 13.30 hrs CEST
Tuesday 13 July: 10.00 hrs 11.00 hrs CEST
Wednesday 14 July: 10.30 hrs 11.30 hrs CEST

Here is a sample of some of the topics to be highlighted in the media programme (embargoed to time of presentation at the congress):

  • New potential obesity drug options
  • Are community interventions in children working?
  • International trends in childhood obesity prevalence
  • Analysis of policy efforts to address the marketing of food to children
  • Long-term consequences of early adulthood obesity

Media registration and facilities

The ICO media office is happy to assist reporters covering the congress on-site or from their desks. A selection of press releases will be distributed at the congress and emailed to off-site reporters during the congress, while further stories will be highlighted in on-site news briefings only. ICO media registration is open to bona fide representatives of print and electronic media. Please see the media registration form for further details of required supporting documents. The original of these documents must also be presented in person at the conference media registration desk.

All sessions are open to journalists. A fully equipped and staffed media workroom with computers, telephone lines and Internet connections will be available. NB: The official conference language is English.
