"In the past, patients may have been treated by a generalist over an extended period of time. Since care was centralized, the need for extended recordkeeping and record management was diminished. But, that is no longer true," contends Hauser. "Presently, care is distributed among many diverse practitioners for very small segments of time, providing little to no patient- doctor continuity, and establishing the need for patients to control, carry and deliver their actual medical information about them in order to assure the best possible care.

"Several companies in the private sector have begun offering Personal Health Record (PHR) systems that allow patients to store their own information by filling out extended medical questionnaires, and then offering access to the information provided back to the patient on demand. Corporations such as Intel Corp., Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Pitney Bowes have announced that they will finance the development of a web-based PHR for their collective 2.5 million employees, dependents and retirees. While this approach may constitute a good beginning, and is similar in concept to MedeFile's basic Digital Health Profile (DHP), it is no substitute for the availability of the actual medical records as authored by the patient's healthcare providers. Patient-provided information does not approach the veracity, completeness or precision necessary to be utilized by healthcare providers directly, which is why MedeFile has chosen to develop a unique patient-centric solution that has carefully considered and squarely addresses the informational needs of the full continuum of healthcare."
