MedeFile Applauds U.S. Presidential Hopefuls for Advocating Widespread Adoption of Electronic Medical Records

Republican candidate John McCain emphasizes the need to promote rapid deployment of 21st century information systems, and opponent Mitt Romney agrees, proposing to use federal incentives to foster more widespread adoption of medical records technology.

"Although this vigorous vocal support for EMR management from our nation's leaders is particularly validating for MedeFile, we maintain a belief that there is a fundamental flaw in these candidates' plans to achieve system-wide adoption of the technology. The current Bush Administration also recognized the value in computerizing medical records, mandating that a standards-based electronic medical record system be in place nationwide by 2011. However, medical practitioners, hospitals and other healthcare providers have been slow to embrace EMR solutions, and are much less likely to rush to comply with government mandates -- not in our opinion because of the complexity and costs involved with deploying these systems, but rather because of the lost income that will result from their deployment.
