Independent health care quality evaluator determines programs improve
FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J., Jan. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medco Health Solutions, Inc., (NYSE: MHS) today announced that it has been awarded URAC's Drug Therapy Management (DTM) Accreditation for its clinical management and member engagement programs that improve pharmacy care and prescription drug safety. The programs that earned accreditation include the Medco Therapeutic Resource Centers(R) that provide patients with access to specialist pharmacists trained in specific chronic and complex conditions, as well as the company's call center and front-end pharmacies.
In October 2007, URAC, an independent evaluator of health care quality, also awarded Medco its inaugural Pharmacy Benefit Management Accreditation, which recognized that Medco is clinically focused and meets quality standards for consumer protection and empowerment.
Medco, one of only four PBMs to have been awarded both URAC accreditations, is pioneering the use of specialist pharmacists to focus on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, gastro-intestinal disorders, psychological/neurological conditions, hematology/oncology, and pulmonary conditions, such as asthma.
"It is rewarding to obtain these accolades for our advanced pharmacy practice approach that has led to the creation of the Medco Therapeutic Resource Centers, where more than 800 specialist pharmacists provide a deep level of expertise in helping patients achieve better clinical outcomes," said Roger Anderson, Medco's chief pharmacist and senior vice president. "Our strategy of moving toward personalized medicine and increased clinical sophistication has allowed us to more effectively serve patients while reducing the cost of overall care."
Medco completed the rollout of the Medco Therapeutic Resource Centers last year, culminating three years of development and the process of training specialist pharmacists in specific chronic and complex conditions. In the areas of pharmacy safety, Medco highlighted its Concurrent Drug Utilization Review, Retrospective Drug Utilization Review and RationalMed(R) Patient Safety Solutions to URAC. The programs aim to overcome gaps in care that lead to adverse drug events, such as drug-drug and drug-disease interactions.
"We applaud Medco on achieving URAC's Drug Therapy Management Accreditation," said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO. "Quality health care is crucial to our nation's welfare and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards and undergo rigorous evaluation by an independent accrediting body. In today's health care market, URAC accreditation provides a mark of distinction for organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality health care."
In November, URAC named Medco as a finalist in its first-ever Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection Awards for its Diabetes Therapeutic Resource Centers' efforts to reduce potentially dangerous errors with syringes and other diabetes supplies.
Also recognized in the Best Practices Awards was the Medco My Rx Choices(R), prescription savings tool that helps members find lower-cost alternatives for the medications they take on an ongoing basis. Through medco.com(R), members are provided information on the drugs they are prescribed and their potential savings they can attain by choosing, for example, a generic alternative or using mail-order versus retail pharmacies. Patients can obtain a printout of their options from My Rx Choices and discuss them with their physicians.
