Matakina Surpasses 100 Systems with Installation of Volpara Objective Breast Density Measurement Software at Rome Memorial Hospital in New York
Date:3/22/2013

Rome, New York (PRWEB) March 22, 2013

Matakina International today announced that the 100th installation of Volpara objective breast density measurement software has been completed at Rome Memorial Hospital in Rome, NY. Designed to help overcome the limitations of mammography to detect cancer in women with dense breasts, Volpara generates objective, automatic measurement of volumetric breast density values along with a BI-RADS Breast Density Classification for mammograms acquired from any commercially available digital mammography system.

“At Rome Memorial, we are committed to ensuring that our patients receive the best possible images using the latest technologies, which is critical to the early detection of breast cancer. That is why we were the first hospital in Oneida County and the first provider in Rome to convert to digital mammography and why we have adopted the Volpara objective breast density software so women can be confident in the accuracy of the breast density results because this software eliminates the subjectivity,” said Dr. John Restivo, chairman of the Medical Imaging Department at Rome Memorial Hospital. “It is critical for physicians and patients to have as many resources available as possible to detect breast cancer early, especially among women for whom the mammogram alone may not be enough.”

When the Breast Density Inform Bill took effect earlier this year, New York became one of five states that now require clinicians to inform women of whether their breasts are dense when they get their mammogram results. Another 15-20 states that are working on or have endorsed density inform legislation.

Cleared by the FDA, HealthCanada, the TGA and CE-marked, Volpara is in use at sites across the globe helping radiologists assess breast density more objectively and helping them better consider who might benefit from additional screening. Volpara is a reliable tool which generates objective, automatic measurement of volumetric breast density and a FDA cleared BI-RADS breast density category. Volpara supports most of the major digital mammography systems, can be displayed on digital mammography and PACS workstations and be integrated into mammography reporting systems.

Breast tissue density has not only been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, it also decreases the sensitivity of the mammogram and thereby may impact early detection. Thirty-five percent of breast cancer goes undetected by mammography in women with dense breasts, as density masks the appearance of tumors (Boyd et al 2007, NEJM). Since both dense breast tissue and cancer appear white on a mammogram, finding cancers can be analogous to looking for a snowball in a snow storm.

“We are very pleased that Rome Memorial marks the 100th installation of the Volpara breast density software as they epitomize the passion and commitment of breast health professionals to use state-of-the-art technology to provide the best breast health care for their patients,” said Ralph Highnam, PhD, CEO of Matakina International. “As we rapidly move past 100 systems and nearly 1 million women’s mammograms having been analyzed, we are proud to work closely with sites to determine the best implement for their patient population to ensure that every patient that gets a mammogram has the benefit of an objective, accurate breast density measurement.”
