SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) today announced that its agents' efforts to educate women about the importance of financial preparedness resulted in the company's donation of $105,000 to cancer research, prevention and treatment organizations, as well as greater awareness throughout the country in 2008.
Forty-five of MassMutual's agencies participated in the company's annual breast cancer awareness campaign, holding more than 100 Pearls of Wisdom(R) educational seminars where women learned about the importance of financial preparedness and the steps they can take to better protect their families and their futures. For each seminar, MassMutual made a contribution to a local cancer-related organization of the agent's choice.
"As always, the best time to review your financial preparedness is before an unexpected life event such as breast cancer occurs," said Beth Wood, assistant vice president of business and women affiliation marketing, MassMutual. "Our goal is to make financial education as accessible and actionable as possible, so women can start taking steps today."
Agents say that women who attended the seminars often were surprised to learn about areas they might have overlooked or misunderstood -- such as protecting their income or retirement savings, including the often-held mistaken belief that cancer survivors cannot qualify for most types of insurance.
"I'm proud to say that MassMutual continually looks at its product portfolio, service offerings, and underwriting guidelines to meet the changing needs of our current and prospective policyholders," said Melissa Millan, senior vice president of insurance product management, MassMutual. "In fact, we've updated our guidelines for breast cancer survivors several times to ensure that we remain current with the positive impacts of medical advancements." Participants from one Houston, Texas-area seminar came away with increased awareness about what to look for in life and disability income insurance and how to assess their 401(k). "I learned how important it is to have adequate life insurance," Betty Guzman commented. A Pelham Manor, NY seminar attendee, Theresa Mastrianni, added, "I now recognize the need to think about and speak to my family about planning the 'who,' 'what' and 'where' of my future long-term custodial care."
