March Is National Social Work Month: Social Workers Work to Inspire Community Action While Facing Threats of Budget Cuts
Date:2/28/2010

Social workers across the state help vulnerable populations like these to secure basic needs. Many of them continue to provide services despite the lack of resources and slow rate of reimbursement from the state. Further budget cuts threaten to close down vital agencies and resources and yet, these individuals continue to service those in need. It is in honor of these dedicated social workers that the National Association of Social Workers Illinois Chapter (NASW IL) designates March as National Professional Social Work Month.

Illinois (PRWEB) February 28, 2010 -- Social workers work in communities all over Illinois. In schools and hospitals, nursing homes and veterans agencies, social workers can be found helping individuals and families in their communities. It may be in aiding a young student with autism, providing mental health services to a returning veteran, or helping a young mother find health care for herself and her newborn.

This year’s National Professional Social Work Month theme is Social Workers Inspire Community Action. During the month of March, NASW IL will be hosting events across the state to honor social work leaders. In the spirit of inspiring community action, NASW IL is also hosting a fundraiser to benefit victims of the Haitian earthquake. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at Kingston Mines from 5:30–7:30pm and will feature live music and hors d’oeuvres. One-hundred percent of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to victims of the Haitian earthquake.

The need for social workers and the agencies they work for has only become more apparent during our current economic downturn. Social workers work to help those dealing with the stress related to being laid off, the increasing trouble of having less access to health care, and the sudden loss of homes due to foreclosures. Further budget cuts will only hurt more Illinois residents in the long run. Social workers work in positions and organizations around the state that allow them to see the full impact of a larger social problem in a community. Many are driven to launch and lead efforts that address the root of such problems.

If you would like to schedule an interview with a social worker on how these budget cuts will affect their work, please contact Nina Nguyen, Communications Coordinator. Those interested in attending the fundraising event, wish to donate money, or want more information about the awards events happening around the state can contact NASW IL by e-mail.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 150,000 members and over 7,000 in Illinois alone. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies. The NASW IL Chapter is located at 404 S Wells 4th Floor, Chicago, IL 60607.
