Many Breast Cancer Patients Are Not Receiving Most Advanced Breast Conserving Surgical Techniques, New Study Finds
Date:10/29/2008

"Breast cancer patients should be assertive with their doctors to ensure that the most modern aesthetic techniques and principles are applied with the same rigor as is given to the treatment of their cancer," Aronowitz said.

The study was conducted by Aronowitz and David Kulber, M.D., of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; and Jeannie Shen, M.D., Joshua Ellenhorn, M.D., and Dajun Qian, Ph.D., of the City of Hope Medical Center. Complete copies of the paper, "Skin-Sparing Mastectomy: A Survey-Based Approach to Defining Standard of Care," are available for downloading at http://www.breastpreservation.org/news.htm.

About the Breast Preservation Foundation

The mission of the nonprofit Breast Preservation Foundation (BPF) is to increase awareness of the skin-sparing mastectomy, an effective cancer surgical technique, through a national campaign of public awareness and medical research and education. Our goal is to provide clinically accurate information about the skin-sparing mastectomy, to educate patients about its advantages, and to empower women to consider and discuss the technique with their breast care team. The BPF advocates that women insist their breast surgeon recognize the importance of a normal breast appearance to a woman's quality of life. Medical studies show that effective surgical treatment of breast cancer is compatible with preservation or even improvement in the appearance of the breast. The mission of the BPF is to educate patients and surgeons to assure that the most modern aesthetic techniques and principles are applied with the same rigor as is given to the treatment of cancer.
