Malibu, CA Based Teen Drug and Mental Health Program, Paradigm Malibu Announces New Methods for Treating Eating Disorders in Teens

Malibu, CA (PRWEB) December 26, 2013

Eight million Americans, according to Statistic Brain, suffer from an eating disorder, with 95 percent of those affected falling between the ages of 12 and 25. Fifty percent of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 believe they are overweight and 42 percent of girls in first through third grade wish to be thinner. "Parents cannot discount the dangers associated with teen eating disorders as 18 to 20 percent of those suffering from Anorexia die within a 20 year period of developing the disease," Cole Rucker of Paradigm Malibu declares.

When one speaks of a teen eating disorder, they may be referring to any mental illness which is specifically related to food, with the three most common being anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eater disorder. Often, disorders of this type tend to be difficult to recognize, much less diagnose, as the adolescent may try to hide the behaviors or the parents may believe the behaviors are related to another medical issue. "Parents need to understand what symptoms they must be looking for if they suspect their child has an eating disorder to catch the problem rapidly and obtain teen mental health treatment promptly," Rucker explains.

Symptoms parents need to watch for include a distorted body image, an obsession with food or exercise, a fear of eating in public or a refusal to eat when hungry. Once parents recognize there is a problem, treatment begins with the initial goal being to address the teen's physical condition, which likely has deteriorated significantly. "As teens struggle to overcome the eating disorder, they often need assistance and continuous monitoring, which is why many parents turn to Paradigm Malibu for assistance," Rucker continues.

Therapy addresses the underlying causes of the specific eating disorder as well as any current habits or practices related to diet and/or exercise that are contributing to the disease. "Therapy comes in many forms, ranging from equine and art therapies to social, emotional, physical and family therapies. Teens differ greatly in terms of their interests and hobbies and each is an individual. Paradigm Malibu recognizes this individuality and creates a unique treatment plan for each child entering the facility," Rucker goes on to say.

Furthermore, Paradigm Malibu offers a total mental health treatment program, a program designed to help those suffering from depression, substance abuse, and also grief and loss. "In many cases, teens suffer from multiple disorders simultaneously and these conditions can be treated together at Paradigm Malibu. Raising a child has become more difficult over the past few decades and Paradigm Malibu is here to assist parents in raising children to be the best they can," Rucker proclaims.
