Malibu, CA Based Teen Drug and Mental Health Program, Paradigm Malibu Announces New Methods for Treating Eating Disorders in Teens

Eight million Americans, according to Statistic Brain, suffer from an eating disorder, with 95 percent of those affected falling between the ages of 12 and 25. Fifty percent of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 believe they are overweight and 42 percent of girls in first through third grade wish to be thinner. "Parents cannot discount the dangers associated with teen eating disorders as 18 to 20 percent of those suffering from Anorexia die within a 20 year period of developing the disease," Cole Rucker of Paradigm Malibu declares.

When one speaks of a teen eating disorder, they may be referring to any mental illness which is specifically related to food, with the three most common being anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eater disorder. Often, disorders of this type tend to be difficult to recognize, much less diagnose, as the adolescent may try to hide the behaviors or the parents may believe the behaviors are related to another medical issue. "Parents need to understand what symptoms they must be looking for if they suspect their child has an eating disorder to catch the problem rapidly and obtain teen mental health treatment promptly," Rucker explains.

Symptoms parents need to watch for include a distorted body image, an obsession with food or exercise, a fear of eating in public or a refusal to eat when hungry. Once parents recognize there is a problem, treatment begins with the initial goal being to address the teen's physical condition, which likely has deteriorated significantly. "As teens struggle to overcome the eating disorder, they often need assistance and continuous monitoring, which is why many parents turn to
