Make the Grade This School Year With Healthy Lunchboxes

RACINE, Wis., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- With childhood obesity on the rise in America(1), it's important to give children healthy food options that they actually want to eat. So, as kids head back to school this fall, parents will have some "homework" of their own--preparing fresh, wholesome and appealing lunches. To help parents please even the pickiest eaters, Ziploc(R) Brand, the food and home storage solution families trust, has teamed up with Taste of Home, the world's No. 1 cooking magazine, to create the "Healthy Lunchboxes" online recipe guide with more than 30 delicious ideas.

"Parents want to provide good nutrition to their children during the school day - it's part of doing right by them - but they need lunchbox ideas that are convenient and affordable," says Kelly Semrau, SC Johnson vice president of global public affairs and communication. "Ziploc(R) products have always provided families time- and money-saving solutions for preparing, protecting and transporting lunches, and we continue that tradition with our new recipe guide."

Good for You, and Good Tasting Too

Show your little ones how much you care by packing lunches worthy of "show and tell." Kids won't even think about swapping when parents use these creative tips and recipes found in the recipe guide:

  • Create Edible Characters. Let your kids wow their friends--and stomachs--with lunch items shaped like their favorite characters. To make a "Pizza Biscuit Bear," roll biscuit dough into a ball, to form the body, and two smaller balls, to form the ears. Create eyes with olive slices, nose with green pepper, mouth with pimiento strips and fur with mozzarella cheese; then bake.
  • Bring Playtime to the Lunch Table. It's no secret that kids love to play with their food. Send kids to school with all the fixings for an artistic "Butterfly Sandwich" packed in Ziploc(R) Brand Sandwich Bags and Twist 'n Loc(R) Fresh Shield(R) Containers - a chicken or tuna salad sandwich cut into four triangles, and slices of fresh carrots, chives and celery for the butterfly markings and antennas. At lunchtime, kids can assemble it themselves.
  • Let Them Dig In With Their Hands. Who said kids are supposed to stay clean during lunch? Send your kids to school with "Handwiches"--a lunch they can literally get their hands on. Fill the inside of bread dough pockets with your kid's favorite ingredients, like ham and cheese. Then pinch the edges together and bake until golden. Make multiple "Handwiches" at once and freeze them to pull out when needed.

Ziploc(R) bags and containers help transport kids' lunches from the bus stop to the cafeteria, while protecting food freshness - and parents can feel good about using them because they do not contain Bisphenol-A (BPA).
