MSSD Approves of the Encinitas School District’s Holistic Education
Date:2/7/2013

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) February 07, 2013

In a recent article NPR.org reported on a controversy facing the Encinitas School District. The article detailed that approximately 260 parents signed a petition stating they are against the schools teaching yoga in the classrooms. Opponents say the yoga instruction also teaches kids aspects of the Hindu religion. However, more than 2,700 individuals have signed a petition in favor of what the schools are teaching. Massage School San Diego, a resource for holistic schools in San Diego, advocates the Encinitas School District’s move toward healthier students through holistic education and applauds the schools for continuing to offer yoga as part of their program.

MSSD recognizes the benefits of integrating holistic education into schools. They see overall wellness as an integral part of every child’s education. Children need to be taught how to control and take care of themselves mentally, emotionally and physically. Schools, like the Encinitas School District, are using nutrition programs and classes, such as yoga, to teach kids self discipline and how to make healthy choices.

A recent New York University study found that the use of yoga in the classroom lead to more calm students overall. The study findings also reported an increase in both social and motor skills. MSSD supports the Encinitas School Districts use of yoga to teach their students wellness and prepare them to better receive daily classroom instruction. MSSD feels that a student is better prepared to be a productive member of society when they are well from head to toe and from the inside out.

MSSD appreciates the Encinitas School Districts’ plan to teach students how to make healthier choices. Part of their holistic approach to wellness includes a nutrition plan where students grow their own vegetables on campus. The harvested vegetables are then served in the schools’ cafeteria lunch and salad bar along with other raw food snacks and healthy food choices.

In a world where obesity and unhealthy choices are too often the norm MSSD finds it refreshing that schools are turning to a more holistic approach to teach wellness. MSSD praises the Encinitas School District for staying the course with their students’ health education.
