WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- MEDRAD's Heilman Center electro-mechanical manufacturing plant located in Fox Chapel, Pa. has been selected as a 2007 IndustryWeek magazine "Best Plant Finalist." MEDRAD's Heilman Center plant was one of approximately twenty-five finalists selected from close to 200 applicant companies. Ten North American winners will be announced in the January 2008 issue of IndustryWeek.

MEDRAD's Heilman Center Plant manufactures electronic fluid delivery systems that enhance cardiovascular (CV), Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR) diagnostic scans, and MR coils and accessories used in medical imaging. The plant opened in 2002 and currently operates one shift of 176 employees working five days per week. Significant achievements include launch of a lean manufacturing system that has reduced assembly errors and training time by 35 percent, increased output per employee by 20% and increased overall productivity 30 percent. The plant also converted to cellular manufacturing, and moved to an inventory "demand pull" replenishment technique program, resulting in a total inventory savings to date of $1 million.

IndustryWeek magazine, a market-leading publication serving the manufacturing industry, selects the finalists from applications which report management practices and plant performance in such areas as quality, customer and supplier relations, employee involvement, application of new technologies, productivity, cost reductions, manufacturing flexibility and responsiveness, inventory management, environmental and safety performance, new product development and overall market results. Manufacturing facilities in the United States, Canada and Mexico are eligible.

"The Heilman Center plant next moves to the final step in the award process, which includes answering a more detailed questionnaire focused on specific plant achievements and process improvements, and possibly a site visit," explains Mike Kochis, Heilman Center plant manager and coordinator of MEDRAD's application process.

Recent award recipients include Boeing, Siemens AG, Guidant, Boston Scientific, Kennametal, IBM, General Electric and Dell Computer. Prior winners from the Pittsburgh area include manufacturing plants from MSA's Safety Products Division in Murrysville (2000), General Cable Automotive Products in Altoona (2003) and Magee Rieger Automotive Systems in Bloomsburg (2006).
