Los Angeles Periodontist, Dr. Markzar, is Now Informing Patients about the Possible Connection between Gum Disease and Cardiovascular Disease
Date:3/13/2013

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) March 13, 2013

Dr. Sam Markzar, Los Angeles periodontist, now informs patients that there may be a connection between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. Patients who suffer from one or both of these conditions need to be aware of this connection and seek regular medical and dental care to control their condition or conditions. Dr. Markzar, Los Angeles dental implants dentist, can work with patients to improve their oral health.

Researchers have long been aware of a correlation between periodontal disease and heart disease. However, they are not sure if one disease causes the other or if both periodontal disease and heart disease are only related. Further research needs to be conducted in order to ascertain if there is a causal relationship or determine whether the two are merely conditions caused by a similar factor. Currently, many medical researchers believe that the two conditions may both be related to inflammation. However, there is some evidence indicating that periodontal disease puts the patient at greater risk for developing heart disease. Dr. Markzar, specialist for dental implants in Beverly Hills, believes that treating periodontal disease and reducing the inflammation associated with this condition may help to reduce the patient’s risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

In addition to the correlation between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, there may be a correlation between periodontal disease and other heart conditions. Periodontal disease may worsen heart conditions, and as a result, special care may be needed for patients with these heart conditions. For example, patients who are at risk for infective endocarditis may need to be treated with antibiotics before they undergo a dental procedure or treatment.

In a related manner, studies indicate a relationship between gum disease and stroke. Periodontal disease may be a risk factor for stroke, according to some studies. In addition, patients with acute cerebrovascular ischemia are more likely to suffer from periodontal disease, although more studies need to be conducted to determine if a causal relationship exists.

Dr. Markzar, periodontist in Beverly Hills, works with patients regularly to help treat periodontal disease and reduce the inflammation associated with gum disease. Those who suffer from periodontal disease should have regular health monitoring to determine if they are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease, and vice versa.
