Long Term Heroin Addiction Leads to Physical Changes in the Brain, Study Says
Date:12/9/2013

Miami, FL (PRWEB) December 09, 2013

A recent study has found that for people who use heroin over a long period of time, changes have been seen in the genes that determine brain function. As changes to a genetic structure tend to be permanent, it is important for people looking to seek treatment to enter into a detox center such as Harbor Village.

As reported by U.S. News on November 11, researchers were able to examine the brains of deceased heroin users to examine what, if any changes had occurred both structurally and at the molecular level. The results were interesting in that the area of the brain known as the striatum was shown to have changed. This area of the brain has been seen to have a role in drug abuse.

Even more interesting, this data shows that changes are made in the brain of addicts that go far beyond just addiction. "Our study addresses a critical gap in our knowledge about heroin addiction because we cannot often directly study the brains of addicted humans," senior author Yasmin Hurd, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City, said in a society news release. “Our results provide important insights into how human brains change in response to long-term heroin use, and give us the knowledge to help treat this dangerous disease.”

Studies such as this could eventually change the way we think of addiction and the ways that we go about treating it. http://health.usnews.com/health-news/news/articles/2013/11/11/study-probes-heroin-addictions-effect-on-the-brain
