Long Term Care Costs Outpacing the Rate of Inflation in Missouri, According to Annual Genworth Financial Study

"Many Missouri residents who had planned to tap their hard-earned nest egg to cover future long term care costs are finding this may no longer be a viable option given the economic downturn," said Buck Stinson, president, insurance products at Genworth Financial. "Two-thirds of people over age 65 will need long term care in their lifetimes. The localized information provided by Genworth's 2009 Cost of Care Survey is invaluable to families and their trusted advisors in mapping out a financial security strategy to cover the growing cost of this vital care."

A Snapshot of Missouri Long Term Care Costs

Nursing Homes: The median annual cost for a private nursing home room ranges from $46,903 to $56,918 in Missouri. The cost in St. Louis is $54,203 and $56,918 in Kansas City. The comparable cost is $51,830 in Springfield and $51,465 in Columbia.

Assisted Living: Assisted living costs in Missouri range statewide from a median annual cost of $19,380 in St. Joseph to $39,648 in Kansas City for a private room. The cost has increased 9 percent per year since 2005 in Kansas City and 10 percent annually over the same period in Columbia, to $29,385. The comparable cost in St. Louis has dropped 1 percent annually over the past five years to $32,400 and by 5 percent in Springfield, to $26,087. Nationally, the annual cost for a private room in an assisted living facility is $33,903 and costs have increased 5 percent annually over the past five years.

Home Care: The median hourly rate for a non-Medicare certified, state licensed home health aide ranges from $16 in Joplin to $22 in Columbia. Costs have risen 4 percent annually over the past five years in Kansas City and 3 percent annually in St. Louis over the same period. The hourly cost for this type of care in both cities is $19.
