Loma Linda University Medical Center Receives $250,000 Research Grant From Hyundai Hope On Wheels In Honor Of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
Date:9/20/2014

Loma Linda, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2014

On Monday, September 22, Loma Linda University Medical Center will receive a $250,000 pediatric cancer research grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels at a check presentation event at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital located on 11234 Anderson St., in Loma Linda. The grant will support the work of Dr. Kimberley Payne, Associate Professor at Loma Linda University and Director of Translational Research. Dr. Payne’s work focuses on leukemia in children.

Loma Linda University Medical Center is one of 36 recipients across the country to receive a 2014 Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant. In all, Hope On Wheels will award $9 million in research grants this September in honor of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Loma Linda University Medical Center is a first time grant winner from Hope On Wheels.

“The funding provided through Hyundai Hope on Wheels is essential for our studies to find medicines and therapies for effectively treating deadly forms of the most common childhood cancer,” says Dr. Payne. “Our lab will study how leukemia cells survive chemotherapy and test a novel treatment that inactivates the molecules leukemia cells use to resist chemotherapy.”

The $250,000 grant to Dr. Payne will be officially presented during a Hope On Wheels Handprint Ceremony at Loma Linda University Medical Center on Monday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m. During the ceremony, Hope On Wheels will honor local children affected with cancer by capturing their handprints on a white 2014 Hyundai Sonata.

Hope On Wheels believes that “Every Handprint Tells A Story,” which is the namesake of its September awareness campaign. That is why, in addition to funding 36 research projects in September, Hope On Wheels will launch the latest advancement of its Every Handprint Tells A Story campaign with a new web experience on http://www.HyundaiHopeOnWheels.org/September. The website will offer an interactive experience where supporters can view videos of courageous children sharing insights into their personal battles with cancer and learn about the work of cancer researchers known as Hyundai Scholars.

“Over the last 16 years, our dealers have worked in partnership with Hyundai in one common goal: to find a cure for a disease that affects far too many of our children,” says Dave Zuchowski, president and chief executive officer, Hyundai Motor America, and board member of Hyundai Hope On Wheels. “Loma Linda Hyundai dealers are an important part of this effort, and we could not be doing this good work without their continued support.”
