Local Families Chosen for Ambassador Role for 2008 March for Babies

ily for this year's event at East Fork State Park -- Turkey Ridge Shelter. 15-month-old Kailah Jefferson was born prematurely at 32-weeks gestation. Weighing in at just 2-pounds 11-ounces, the cheerful little girl, who loves singing and dancing, had to fight to survive. Doctors diagnosed Kailah with anemia of prematurity and had to treat her with several medications, intravenous feedings, and surfactant therapy to prevent respiratory distress. Today, Kailah's mom describes her daughter as talkative, well mannered, and gorgeous. Trista Jefferson says the March of Dimes helped her family in the darkest of times. "It's important for people to see that with the right medical care, a child born prematurely can grow to be perfectly normal."

"The involvement of local families who've experienced a premature birth is a key element in our goal of helping more babies come into the world healthy," said Karen Keller, Director of the March of Dimes Ohio Chapter. "We are fortunate to have Ambassador Families so committed to our cause."

Premature birth touches half a million babies and their families every year. 360 babies are born preterm each week just in Ohio. Babies born too soon are more likely to die or have disabilities. More than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects that can mean a lifetime of disability. Babies born healthy need champions, too, to be sure they have access to newborn screening and preventive health care. The March of Dimes is there for all babies.

In Cincinnati, March for Babies will take place on April 27th at 9:00am at Sawyer Point. The Clermont County March for Babies will take place on April 26th at 9:00am at East Fork State Park -- Turkey Ridge Shelter. Funds raised by March for Babies support local research into premature birth and infant mortality, community projects and education designed to help pregnant women, and advocacy efforts to encourage federal, state, and local governments to develop public policies and e
